Adem\u00e1s de su ingente laborpo\u00e9tica y novel\u00edstica,el escritor tom\u00f3 posici\u00f3n ante los sucesos pol\u00edticos de su pa\u00eds y ocup\u00f3diversos cargos pol\u00edticos como senador y diputado. Merecedor del reconocimientocomo \u201cpr\u00edncipe de las letras francesas\u201d, en este libro titulado \u201cLosPirineos\u201d dej\u00f3 escritas y dibujadas las impresiones recogidas acerca de nuestropa\u00eds y sus gentes durante el viaje que realiz\u00f3 por Euskal Herria durante elverano de 1843. Iniciada en su ni\u00f1ez, la relaci\u00f3n de Victor Hugo con Euskal Herriadej\u00f3 en \u00e9l tan profunda huella que, adem\u00e1s de volver a recorrer hacia la mitadde su vida aquellos parajes de su infancia para dejar constancia de lafavorable opini\u00f3n que le merec\u00edan nuestro pa\u00eds y sus gentes, tambi\u00e9n hizopatente la fascinaci\u00f3n que le produc\u00eda su lengua ancestral mediante la inclusi\u00f3n en varias de sus obras depalabras y frases en euskara, toda una tradici\u00f3n en la literatura francesadesde los tiempos de Rabelais. El 27 de febrero de 1881, cuando elpueblo de Par\u00eds rindi\u00f3 un multitudinario homenaje a Victor Hugo, (&#8230;) decenasde miles de parisinos desfilaron bajo las ventanas de su domicilio. Junto aellos desfilaron tambi\u00e9n representantes de 324 pa\u00edses con sus correspondientesbanderas, entre ellas la que podr\u00edamosconsiderar la primera ikurri\u00f1a.
