Publicada en 1903, aclamada por la cr\u00edtica cuando su publicaci\u00f3n, El enigma de las arenas es la primera, la m\u00e1s cl\u00e1sica y posiblemente la mejor novela de esp\u00edas. Todos los maestros del g\u00e9nero, desde Eric Ambler a John le Carr\u00e9, rindieron merecido homenaje a esta magn\u00edfica historia, que adem\u00e1s transcurre en el mar, lo que combina de modo muy interesante el thriller de espionaje con la narraci\u00f3n n\u00e1utica. Cuando el narrador, Carruthers, aburrido de su vida ociosa en Londres, acepta una invitaci\u00f3n de un amigo para navegar en velero, no sabe que se est\u00e1 embarcando en una peligrosa aventura que tendr\u00e1 por escenario el paisaje inh\u00f3spito y los arenales de las islas del B\u00e1ltico, all\u00ed donde la marina del k\u00e1iser empieza a preparar, clandestinamente, futuras guerras. El autor, Robert E. Childers, de origen angloirland\u00e9s, luch\u00f3 en la guerra de los Boers, fue condecorado por sus servicios a la corona brit\u00e1nica durante la Primera Guerra Mundial (que \u00e9l predijo en parte con esta novela) y luego combati\u00f3 contra los ingleses en Irlanda en las filas del IRA.
