Hoy, sin embargo, especialistas en el g\u00e9nero como Julian Symons y Paul Collins conceden ese privilegiado puesto a una novela publicada por entregas en 1862 (luego, en forma de libro, en 1865), El misterio de Notting Hill, escrita bajo seud\u00f3nimo por el abogado Charles Warren Adams. En ella, el investigador de una empresa aseguradora debe aclarar las circunstancias de la muerte de la esposa del bar\u00f3n R., que al parecer se envenen\u00f3 con \u00e1cido pr\u00fasico despu\u00e9s de entrar son\u00e1mbula en el laboratorio de su marido.
