Tiene una continuidad tem\u00e1tica y cronol\u00f3gica con otra novela de la misma escritora, ya que es la conclusi\u00f3n de la historia de los personajes de Los pazos de Ulloa, continuidad que la autora propone en el subt\u00edtulo de la obra.Es una brillante continuaci\u00f3n del libro anterior; Emilia Pardo Baz\u00e1n usa en esta obra una prosa m\u00e1s po\u00e9tica y descriptiva, y en sus p\u00e1ginas se siente el amor que profesa a su tierra recreando los ambientes campestres. Vemos desarrollados los personajes de Perucho y Manuela, y conocemos a otro no menos interesante: Gabriel. La tesis de esta novela es una invocaci\u00f3n a la cultura, concretamente a la religi\u00f3n, al naturalismo cristiano, frente al imperio de la naturaleza desordenada y sin control.
