El inter\u00e9s de la Iglesia de Roma por controlar el Camino de Santiago y las intrigas de Odil\u00f3n, abad de Cluny para lograrlo; la construcci\u00f3n de monasterios y hospitales; la penetraci\u00f3n en la Pen\u00ednsula Ib\u00e9rica del arte rom\u00e1nico; la ambici\u00f3n de los nobles; la vida de los vascos paganos de las monta\u00f1as, as\u00ed como la de los otros pueblos cristianos y musulmanes; los amores del rey y las desavenencias con su esposa, condesa de Castilla, son algunos de los temas tratados en esta historia novelada de una \u00e9poca fascinante y poco conocida.El rey Sancho muri\u00f3 asesinado en el a\u00f1o 1035 y a su muerte el gran reino creado por \u00e9l fue repartido entre sus hijos, Garc\u00eda (rey de Navarra), Fernando (primer rey de Castilla, Le\u00f3n y Asturias), y Ramiro (primer rey de Arag\u00f3n).
