Agotada a lo largo de m\u00e1s de una d\u00e9cada, esta obra reaparece ahora en una versi\u00f3n revisada, actualizada y en un nuevo formato. En ella se describe la historia de un espect\u00e1culo popular que naci\u00f3 como una derivaci\u00f3n de la instant\u00e1nea fotogr\u00e1fica gracias al ingenio de inventores e industriales del siglo XIX (Edison y Lumi\u00e8re), creci\u00f3 en barracas de feria o espect\u00e1culos de music hall y lleg\u00f3 a convertirse en f\u00e1brica de sue\u00f1os colectivos en templos de m\u00e1rmol y de suntuosos cortinajes, para recluirse luego en minisalas, pantallas de televisi\u00f3n o en soportes inform\u00e1ticos. El libro describe tanto su evoluci\u00f3n est\u00e9tica, como forma art\u00edstica de la modernidad occidental que ha influido profundamente en otras artes, como su evoluci\u00f3n t\u00e9cnica y sus implicaciones socioecon\u00f3micas e ideol\u00f3gicas. Agente activo de propaganda pol\u00edtica ya desde la guerra de Cuba (1898), la de los b\u00f3xers en China (1899-1901) y la ruso-japonesa (1904-1905), supo entablar un fruct\u00edfero di\u00e1logo con los movimientos de vanguardia del siglo XX e inscribirse en las revoluciones est\u00e9ticas e intelectuales desarrolladas a lo largo de m\u00e1s de un siglo.Pero de su diversificada cantera imaginativa surgieron tambi\u00e9n historias de aventuras en parajes ex\u00f3ticos, dramas amorosos, s\u00e1tiras del poder pol\u00edtico o econ\u00f3mico, gestas heroicas y tenebrosas intrigas criminales.
