Tiene numerosos protagonistas, pero se centra en tres individuos. El primero, el doctor Juan Negr\u00edn, v\u00edctima de lo que se podr\u00eda llamar una conjura de necios, trat\u00f3 de impedirla. Los otros dos fueron responsables de lo acontecido. Uno, Juli\u00e1n Besteiro, actu\u00f3 con una asombrosa ingenuidad. El otro, Segismundo Casado, con una sorprendente combinaci\u00f3n de cinismo, arrogancia y ego\u00edsmo.
