Un centenar de peque\u00f1as p\u00e1ginas de apuntes \u00edntimos, rellenas con letra cambiante, menuda y dif\u00edcil \u2014letra dibujada en la complicidad del follaje o rasgueada sobre marcha violenta, bajo el cielo encendido o junto a un exiguo candil\u2014, componen los que denominamos hoy, con una simplicidad demasiado incongruente para su fulguraci\u00f3n, Diarios de campa\u00f1a de Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed. Son su documento final por excelencia. Se inician el 14 de febrero de 1895, en tierra quisqueyana, y quedan inconclusos el 17 de mayo de 1895 en la manigua redentora, dos jornadas antes de precipitarse, ensangrentado, entre dos \u00e1rboles cuyos nombres debi\u00f3 haber reci\u00e9n aprendido: acogido, al fin, por la tierra h\u00fameda, avecindado con una corriente que se anunciaba, desde hac\u00eda d\u00edas, turbulenta y que prologaba su cercan\u00eda con lo inevitable.
