La fuerza dram\u00e1tica del relato estriba en el hecho de que nadie de los que intervienen en el proceso es capaz, en su fuero interno, de creer que el acusado es plenamente culpable pero, por temor, tampoco nadie quiere enfrentarse a la m\u00e1quina inquisitorial. Fue Pablo de Olavide (Lima, Per\u00fa, 1725-1803) un personaje interesant\u00edsimo. Gran viajero, vivi\u00f3 ocho a\u00f1os en Francia, donde trab\u00f3 amistad con Voltaire y Denis Diderot, que le inculcaron las ideas ilustradas. Al instalarse en Espa\u00f1a, pronto fue llamado por el Conde de Aranda para ejercer tareas de gobierno. Pero la Inquisici\u00f3n se cruz\u00f3 en su camino. El juicio se celebr\u00f3 en Sevilla y fue un verdadero acontecimiento, pues, m\u00e1s que la vista a una persona, lo que all\u00ed se dilucidaba era el choque entre dos formas de entender la sociedad: la represora de la Inquisici\u00f3n y la modernizadora de la Ilustraci\u00f3n. Jos\u00e9 Jim\u00e9nez Lozano naci\u00f3 en Langa (\u00c1vila) en 1930. Es autor de ensayos \u2014Los cementerios civiles y la heterodoxia espa\u00f1ola (1978), Sobre jud\u00edos, moriscos y conversos (1982) o Gu\u00eda espiritual de Castilla (1984)\u2014, narraciones \u2014Par\u00e1bolas y circunloquios de Rab\u00ed Isaac Ben Yehuda (1985), El santo de mayo (1976) o El grano de ma\u00edz rojo (1988, Premio Nacional de la Cr\u00edtica)\u2014, novelas \u2014Duelo en la Casa Grande (1982), Historia de un oto\u00f1o (1971), El sambenito (1972) y La salamandra (1973), las tres \u00faltimas publicadas en Destino\u2014 y un diario \u2014Los tres cuadernos rojos (1985).
