Gracias al comercio con las Indias, la ciudad vive un ef\u00edmero esplendor, en contraste con el canto del cisne del otrora poderoso Imperio espa\u00f1ol. En semejante paradoja se desarrolla la vida y peripecias de Yago Valtrueno, un p\u00edcaro vital, divertido e irreverente: &#8216;Soy convicto de desobediencia, de sedici\u00f3n, de impiedad y de ignorancia&#8217;, confiesa. Yago, aparte de otros vicios, es un impenitente fumador y un empedernido bebedor de caf\u00e9: &#8216;Amo el caf\u00e9 porque me mantiene despierto y se lo orino a la Muerte en la cara&#8217;.
