Tras ellos, en el centro de la plaza, se ergu\u00eda la estatua de m\u00e1rmol de la m\u00e1s famosa entre los naturales de la isla: la emperatriz Josefina. Rodeada de magn\u00edficas palmeras reales, la figura representada por la estatua parec\u00eda escuchar con tristeza y a\u00f1oranza la m\u00fasica de la banda que tocaba a poca distancia de su pedestal. Los alegres tejados rojos y las celos\u00edas pintadas de verde de las casas circundantes, en la amplia plaza, formaban un fondo muy adecuado para los ind\u00edgenas vestidos de vivos colores, que circulaban por entre los senderos del jard\u00edn de la plaza. Las risas suaves y musicales de las mujeres parec\u00edan ser el contrapunto del ruido leve que hac\u00edan al oscilar sus largos pendientes. El cielo, de intenso azul, el mar, casi de color violeta, las palmeras que se mec\u00edan al viento y aun el mismo ambiente parec\u00eda proclamar que corr\u00eda la primavera en Fort de France. Algunas muchachas de tez casi cobriza re\u00edan y lanzaban miradas a sus morenos compa\u00f1eros. Era la \u00e9poca de la diversi\u00f3n y del amor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>George L.
