De no ser por aquel ruido, habr\u00eda reinado un silencio absoluto. Pero s\u00f3lo al producirse se revel\u00f3 en las sombras la presencia de un ser humano. Se oy\u00f3 un ligero chasquido sobre el mon\u00f3tono tic-tac. Una luz azulada arroj\u00f3 de pronto su resplandor sobre la pulimentada superficie de una mesa. Y sobre ella, bajo la pantalla de una l\u00e1mpara, apareci\u00f3 el objeto que produc\u00eda cl ruido. Era un reloj de curiosa construcci\u00f3n. Colocado formando \u00e1ngulo con la tapa de la mesa, su amplio cuadrante no mostraba manecilla alguna. En lugar de \u00e9stas ten\u00eda tres c\u00edrculos, marcado con doce n\u00fameros el interior; divididos en sesenta partes los dos exteriores. Las muescas practicadas en cada uno de estos estaban rodeados por unos anillos destinados a dejar ver un solo n\u00famero por vez.
