O al menos eso es lo que est\u00e1 a punto de descubrir Jack Branch en este thriller donde la violencia se transmite de padres a hijos y las pegajosas sombras del delta del Missisipi esconden los m\u00e1s terribles secretos. Branch, heredero de una familia de la clase alta sure\u00f1a, lleva tres a\u00f1os dando clase en el instituto de Lakeland cuando descubre que, entre los alumnos de su popular curso sobre la naturaleza del mal, se encuentra Eddie Miller, el hijo de un hombre que tiempo atr\u00e1s tortur\u00f3 y asesin\u00f3 a una muchacha de la localidad. Una indiscreci\u00f3n del profesor hace que Eddie sea detenido por el secuestro de una compa\u00f1era que pocos d\u00edas despu\u00e9s aparece sana y salva. Por ello, cuando su pupilo recobra la libertad, Branch decide ocuparse personalmente de acabar con el estigma que marca su existencia. El primer paso consiste en encargarle la redacci\u00f3n de un trabajo que le permita hacer las paces con el recuerdo de su padre. Pero, mientras cumple con su cometido, Eddie comienza a sacar a la luz una serie de recuerdos a los que los habitantes de Lakeland preferir\u00edan no tener que enfrentarse.
