Entre 1900 y 1910 exist\u00eda en Chicago el Everleigh Club, el burdel m\u00e1s famoso y elegante del mundo, cuya habitaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s lujosa era un sal\u00f3n recubierto enteramente de oro. Regentaban el prost\u00edbulo las hermanas Mina y Aida Everleigh, que proced\u00edan de Kentucky y se hab\u00edan instalado en Chicago. El autor, inspir\u00e1ndose en esta an\u00e9cdota hist\u00f3rica, ha recreado imaginariamente el ambiente y las vicisitudes de este caro y m\u00edtico club de principios de siglo. En Chicago por aquella \u00e9poca se acaba de elegir un alcalde cuya campa\u00f1a electoral se ha fundado en la promesa de cerrar todos los burdeles de la ciudad, comenzando por el de las hermanas. \u00c9stas se ven entonces obligadas a recurrir a toda clase de estratagemas para eludir el acoso de la justicia y salvar el negocio. Mientras, un peligroso man\u00edaco, aficionado a matar y despedazar mujeres, se introduce subrepticiamente en el burdel.
