Es la figura m\u00e1s representativa de la poes\u00eda portuguesa del siglo XX. Sus primeros a\u00f1os transcurrieron en Ciudad del Cabo mientras su padrastro ocupaba el consulado de Portugal en Sud\u00e1frica. A los diecisiete a\u00f1os viaj\u00f3 a Lisboa, donde despu\u00e9s de interrumpir estudios de Letras altern\u00f3 el trabajo de oficinista con su inter\u00e9s por la actividad literaria. La influencia que en \u00e9l ejercieron autores como Nietzsche, Milton y Shakespeare, lo llevaron a traducir parte de sus obras y a producir los primeros poemas en idioma ingl\u00e9s. Dirigi\u00f3 varias revistas y pronto se convirti\u00f3 en el propulsor del surrealismo portugu\u00e9s. &#8216;Mensaje&#8217; fue su primera obra en portugu\u00e9s y \u00fanica publicada en vida del poeta.
